In the town of Oberammergau, an historical event takes place only once a decade; and enlightening and dramatic production of the Passion Play.
This incredible experience displays a profound representation of faith and dedication to share the life of Christ through art. Performed every ten years, the community comes together in recognition of the deliverance from the Great Plague of 1634.
The History
The time is 1633 in the middle of the Thirty Years War, and the villagers of Oberammergau in Southern Germany, after months of suffering and death from the plague, vowed to put on the ‘Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ’ every ten years. At Pentecost 1634, they fulfilled their pledge for the first time on a stage they put up in the cemetery above the fresh graves of the plague victims.
The Participants
All actors of the world’s largest amateur dramatic performance come from the village, since a special play law is in effect. All participants, from actors through to members of the choir, orchestra members, firemen and ushers, must have been born in Oberammergau or have lived there for at least 20 years.
The Schedule – Oberammergau 2020 Passion Play
The planning has already started for the 42nd Passion Play. More than 500,000 visitors are expected, over half of which will be international guests.

Preparations begin
The Oberammergau Council appointed the production team of the 2020 Passion Play and the preparations for the 2020 Passion Play began.

2019

Actors announced
In spring, the names of the actors will be announced. Altogether, more than 2,000 Oberammergau villagers will participate in the 2020 Passion Play. 2019 – By Ash Wednesday 2019, all participants in the play let their hair grow – and men also their beards – in accordance with a long tradition, the ‘Beard and Hair Edict’.

In Autumn, rehearsals for the 42nd Passion Play will start.
