This is followed by a visit to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to view the baby elephant feeding and watch these gentle giants lumber down to the river for a bath and scrub-up from their keepers. Then onto Dambulla, with a stop for lunch. Before checking into your hotel, enjoy a visit to the famous Dambulla Rock Cave Temples. A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, the five well-preserved sanctuaries are filled with statues of Buddha and a fabulous display of murals.(Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)

This morning visit the spectacular citadel of Sigiriya, the ‘fortress in the sky’, set atop a towering outcrop which rises 200 metres above the plains. Halfway up, meet the ‘Heavenly Maidens’, colourful frescoes of beguiling, bare-breasted damsels painted some 1500 years ago. Then ascend between the giant claws of the Lion Gate to the remains of the upper palace. Afterwards, continue to Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital of Sri Lanka, which enjoyed 100 years of majesty before being plundered by invaders, reclaimed by the jungle and forgotten for 700 years.(Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)

Now on your hotel in Kandy, hidden behind lush tropical gardens on the banks of the Mahaweli river.
